In Memoriam: Chief Zaire Nzikale Badiki (1945 - 2024)

It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to Chief Zaire Nzikale Badiki, a revered figure and esteemed partner in our mission to conserve the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. Chief Zaire, born in Bapukeli in 1945 to Bakidi and Tamasa, was a distinguished member of the Bandiekwa Mbuti clan.

Throughout his life, Chief Zaire embodied leadership and dedication to his community and the preservation of nature. Renowned as a Mbuti Chief, he served as deputy village Chief for both Bantou and Mbuti communities in Bapukeli village. A celebrated traditional hunter, he meticulously observed the forest, offering crucial insights to Reserve managers to protect against poaching and other illegal activities. Despite the challenges of old age and declining health, Chief Zaire remained steadfastly committed to Reserve and all its partners, and was a vocal advocate for the integration of indigenous beliefs and needs into the management structure of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. His unwavering loyalty and tireless efforts in safeguarding the natural world serve as an enduring legacy.

Chief Zaire Nzikale Badiki passed away in Bapukeli on February 12, 2024. His memory will forever inspire us to continue conservation efforts in his honor.
