Camera Trapping for Unique Species
This January and June, our team embarked on camera trap expeditions through the dense forest landscapes of Mamopi, Bianje, Bandisende, and Bukulani. The primary goal of the trip was to determine the presence of various animals, with a particular focus on the elusive okapi. Ten cameras were set in these locations of interest to capture the biodiversity of the area and species abundance and movement. The team also collected memory cards from previously set cameras to review upon their return from the field.
Their efforts were well rewarded with a wealth of imagery displaying the richness of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. Not only did the cameras capture exciting footage of okapi, red river hogs, and elephants, they successfully documented the presence of an African golden cat in one of the regions. The sighting of this rare species is an indication of the Reserve's pristine forest and signifies habitat that is highly conducive to the well-being of the okapi population. Such findings provide renewed optimism and determination to preserve this invaluable ecosystem.
